The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF) provides colleges and universities emergency assistance in two parts.
If a college or university accepts the assistance, they must pass half of the money to federal Title IV-eligible students as an emergency grant for expenses related to the COVID-19 pandemic, such as food, housing, course materials, health care, and child care. The remaining half of the CARES Act funding must be used to help the college or university to help with expenses of moving to remote teaching and learning during the COVID-19 pandemic.
